A REVIEW BY TAMAR LEVINE (Appeared in many periodicals)

I don’t know about you, but after
Passover I always feel so
uncomfortable
in my body. All that matzah and rich
food makes me feel, and look, at least
a size larger than I was before the
festival. It’s about this time of year
that I start thinking about either
going on a new diet, or getting back
on
the old one I was on before Passover.
And then I start wistfully thinking
about how helpful it would be if only
there was a diet and exercise guide
for
us Jewish women. I don’t mean a
particular diet, rather some kind of
diet and exercise guide that
understands our way of life and gives
us lots of practical tips, together
with plenty of motivating ideas to
help
us lose all those unwanted pounds.
You know, one that leaves out all the
stuff that is not applicable to our
lifestyle, but helps us out when it
comes to Shabbat and the Festivals.
One
that we can use when we are away on
vacation or when we go to a
restaurant,
or a wedding etc. But every year those
wistful thoughts remain just that,
wistful thoughts. That is, until this
year. In what I can only call an
encyclopedic masterpiece, Chava
Goldman
has put her years of experience as a
Diet Consultant and her position as
one
of the premier aerobic instructors in
the Jewish world, together with her
already well known talent for writing,
to produce the first ever guide to
dieting and exercise specifically made
for the Jewish woman.
Entitled "How to Succeed on Any Diet!
A
Jewish and Friendly Guide to Dieting &
Exercise", this book is exactly what
the title says it is. It is a book
that
will help you succeed on any diet you
choose. Tailor-made for the Jewish
woman, this book covers such topics as
Shabbat, the Festivals, vacationing in
a bungalow colony, eating at a wedding
or bar mitzvah and much, much more. It
helps you analyse your lifestyle so
you
can decide which diet is best for you
and then proceeds to give you hundreds
of practical, well tested tips to deal
with all the potential stumbling
blocks
that a dieter may encounter throughout
the year. In addition this book is
full
of inspiring messages, motivating
thoughts, lots of sound hashkafos and
plenty of encouragement. To top it all
off, there is an entire section
dedicated to exercise, that explains,
guides and demystifies the often
overwhelming world of fitness.
But I must say, what I enjoyed most
about this book is that it was so
interesting and fun to read. I didn’t
want to put it down. I felt that the
author was having a conversation with
me in my living room. The subtitle
says
the book is friendly, and it certainly
is. With her English sense of humor
Chava lightens up even the most boring
subjects.
To predict this book is going to be a
runaway best seller doesn’t do it
justice. This book sets the standards
for all such works in the future. From
its eye-catching cover to its
beautiful
interior layout, it is a classy,
polished, professional masterpiece
that
belongs in every Jewish woman’s home –
even if she doesn’t need to diet.
